Provincial Traffic Services arrest 77 in province-wide operations

Provincial Traffic Services maintained a high-visibility presence across the Western Cape over the past week, resulting in 77 arrests for serious offences. Between 28 April and 3 May, officers stopped more than 36 000 vehicles as part of operations targeting high-risk behaviour.

Of those arrested, 62 motorists were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. In Beaufort West on Sunday, a man was arrested for driving under the influence and resisting arrest. In Vredenburg on Friday, another motorist was arrested for driving under the influence and reckless and negligent driving after failing to stop and attempting to flee, leading to a high-speed chase before being apprehended.

Reckless behaviour remains a concern, with one driver arrested for excessive speeding after being recorded at 164 km/h in a 120 km/h zone near Beaufort West on Saturday. Four individuals were also arrested for possession of fraudulent documentation.

Traffic officers also faced hostility during operations. A taxi driver was arrested at the Rawsonville weighbridge on Sunday for allegedly threatening a traffic officer, while another man in Beaufort West on Thursday was arrested for attempting to induce an officer to act unlawfully.

Tragically, 20 crashes were recorded during the week, resulting in 22 fatalities, including 12 pedestrians, 8 passengers, 1 cyclist, and 1 motorcyclist.

Enforcement outcomes
• 8 116 fines issued for driver and vehicle fitness offences
• 13 vehicles impounded
• 171 unroadworthy vehicles removed from service
• 319 speeding offences recorded

Traffic officers are working hard to protect lives, and enforcement will remain firm to ensure those who endanger others are held accountable.

Residents and visitors are urged to obey the rules of the road, avoid driving under the influence, and remain alert, especially in areas with high pedestrian activity.
