Premier Zille to Launch Apprenticeship Game Changer

5 October 2016

Tomorrow, 6 October 2016, Premier Helen Zille will officially launch the Western Cape’s Apprenticeship Game Changer at the annual Premier’s Council on Skills. The engagement is taking place at the Cape Town College in Pinelands.

The Premier’s Council on Skills was established in 2011 and includes representatives from government, learning institutions and business.  The purpose of this council is to ensure that all of the relevant skills development role players within the province gather in one space to discuss areas of potential economic growth, and look at how to develop the skills required to meet the demand created by this growth.

Drastically increasing the number of qualified apprentices in the province has been prioritised as a Game Changer by the Western Cape Government over the next few years.

The main goal of the Apprenticeship Game Changer is to achieve sufficient, appropriately qualified technical and vocational skilled people to meet the needs of prioritised economic growth areas in the Western Cape by 2019. The sectors are Oil and Gas, Tourism, Agri-processing, Energy and ICT.

Premier Zille will be outlining the main targets and outcomes under this Game Changer and, more importantly, the critical role employers need to play in ensuring its success.

The Premier will be joined by Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde.

Businesses and learners who have benefitted from apprenticeship programmes will also be sharing their experiences at the launch.

There will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs for members of the media.

All media are invited to attend.
