WCED warns public about fake examination assistant and teaching vacancy advertisements

21 October 2026

Statement by Bronagh Hammond – Director Communication – Western Cape Education Department

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has become aware of fraudulent online advertisements claiming to offer employment opportunities within the education sector.

The WCED has received several enquiries regarding a social media advertisement claiming that the Department of Basic Education is recruiting unemployed youth as examination assistants to mark Grade 12 examination scripts in December 2026 for a payment of R8 230. This advertisement is false and should be disregarded.

The WCED has also been alerted to another website advertising teaching vacancies at schools that have not advertised these posts and where no such vacancies exist. Some schools have confirmed that the advertised positions are fraudulent and were not authorised by the schools concerned.

Members of the public are urged to exercise caution when responding to online employment advertisements. Warning signs include requests to apply via private email accounts, such as Gmail addresses, and advertisements that do not follow official recruitment processes.

The following websites contain false advertising of examination assistant and educator positions:

We wish to alert the broader public to the following:

  • Permanent teaching posts are advertised only through the WCED's Directorate: Recruitment and Selection.
  • The WCED's online E-Recruitment System is the official platform used to advertise and apply for educator posts: https://www.westerncape.gov.za/education/vacancies
  • Unemployed educators seeking employment opportunities in the Western Cape public school system must register and apply through the E-Recruitment System.
  • Employment opportunities in examinations is also advertised through the WCED website: https://www.westerncape.gov.za/education/national-senior-certificate-marking-officials
  • The WCED, including Head Office, District Offices and schools, will never request payment for job applications, interviews or appointments.

Members of the public are encouraged to verify any employment opportunities through official WCED channels before submitting personal information or documentation.
