Premier to provide update on province's sustainable development initiatives

18 October 2017

Tomorrow, Thursday 19 October 2017, Premier Helen Zille will provide a progress update on the province’s sustainable development initiatives at government-run facilities. This includes energy- and water-saving interventions.

Premier Zille will visit one of the buildings occupied by the Department of Transport and Public Works, where solar PV panels have been installed in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and future dependence on expensive grid electricity.
Solar PV installation forms part of the Western Cape Government’s Energy Security Game Changer, which seeks to generate power from low-carbon, sustainable sources to grow businesses and sustain households in the Western Cape. It is intended to achieve this through a focus on enhancing the uptake of solar PV, encouraging residents and businesses to become energy efficient, supporting municipalities to do better load management, and purchasing power from independent power producers (IPPs).

Premier Zille will highlight the savings incurred as a result of solar PV installations at the 9 Dorp Street building, in addition to three other public facilities with solar PV installations across the province.

Premier Zille will also highlight various water-saving interventions, led by the Department of Transport and Public Works in government buildings, under the provincial government’s Water Business Continuity Plan (BCP).

All media are invited to attend. There will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs of one of the installed Solar PV systems (kindly note that no high heels will be allowed on the roof).

Date: Thursday, 19 October 2017
