Police Brutality has No Place in the Western Cape

12 July 2010

The latest incident involving the assault of a civilian by police officers in Durbanville yesterday, once again re-iterates the need for civilian oversight, and in this regard, I strongly condemn the behaviour of the officers concerned.

The community has a right to expect protection and not brutality from the police and this type of behaviour tarnishes the reputation of the entire police service. I must emphasise that there are outstanding police officers in the service, who risk their lives on a daily basis, in serving their communities, and I appeal to the public to not judge the entire police service by the actions of a few individuals.

I have already requested a full investigation and detailed factual report from the provincial police commissioner, and will closely monitor the progress in this regard.
