Over 900 Speeding Offences Recorded This Weekend

On 24 and 25 October, 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 539 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

A total of 1 586 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 39 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Swellendam at 1.35 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000ml.

A total of 11 678 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 974 speeding offences were recorded.  Two hundred and nine (209) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 283 250.

Highest Speeds Recorded

  • 201 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 133 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Swellendam service area.
  • 83 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna area.

Three Other Arrests

  • 1 x False Documentation Arrest (Swellendam).
  • 1 x Dagga Arrest (Laingsburg).
  • 1 x Refuse to Obey Instruction from an Officer Arrest (Brackenfell).

This weekend 17 fatalities were reported:

  • Parow– 1 x Driver

Eden Central Karoo

  • Dysseldorp 1 X Driver

Winelands/Overberg

  • Ceres – 1 x Driver
  • Wellington – 2 x drivers
  • Wolseley – 1 x Driver, 3 x Passengers

West Coast

  • Klawer – 1 x Passenger
  • Vredenburg – 1 x Driver
