Northern, Tygerberg COVID-19 update: ‘The virus is everywhere, keep safe’

18 December 2020

The Northern (77%), Tygerberg (81%) subdistricts in the Metro continued to have an increase of recorded COVID-19 infections this week, with rapid outbreaks in Bothasig and Durbanville and ongoing outbreaks in Kraaifontein, Wallacedene, Edgemead, Scottsville and Northpine.

According to our local surveillance data, the Northern and Tygerberg subdistricts are poised to soon exceed their first wave levels of active infections.

Acting director for the Northern Tygerberg subdistrict Leilah Najjaar has advised residents to take extra precautions to keep safe.

“This virus is everywhere, not only in the areas mentioned where there are concerning outbreaks. Our hospitals are under pressure in both the public and private sector. We are doing all that we can to fight this pandemic and to keep our communities safe. We call on all residents to help us stop the spread of the virus by following the rules and avoiding crowded and confined spaces. Remember to wear your mask, wash your hands, stay home when you’re sick and to keep a distance of 1.5m from others.”

In addition, the Northern and Tygerberg subdistricts also recorded 14 and 32 new deaths, respectively.

Stick to COVID-19 safety to keep your loved ones safe

It is important that we continue to make safer choices this holiday season and beyond as the virus is still here. Here’s how you can keep your loved ones safe.

  • Wear your mask properly, by ensuring that your mask always covers mouth and nose. Remember to replace your mask if it’s wet and to store it in a container until you can wash it. You can wash your mask with soap and water and iron it. Aim to wear a clean mask every day.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or sanitiser. Washing your hands with soap and water is the most effective way to prevent infections, and germs from spreading. If soap and water isn’t available, then using hand sanitiser.
  • Avoid crowded or confined spaces which could promote super-spreader events and remember to keep a distance of 1.5m from others.
  • Avoid non-essential gatherings, but if you are socialising, try to meet up with a friend outside and maintain a distance of 1,5 m and wear your mask.
  • If you have tested positive for COVID-19 or are awaiting your results after a test, it is important to stay home and to avoid contact with others, including those inside your home. People who have tested positive or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, must isolate for 10 days.

The COVID-19 pandemic is not over, and infections are increasing every day. It is important that we remain vigilant and careful. We must do everything we can to prevent the spread of infections.
