Newly-constructed schools in Western Cape

Four of our newly-constructed schools opened their doors on 11 January 2017. The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project teams have done exceptionally well to deliver state-of-the-art facilities within the planned time and budget.

• The new primary school in Tulbagh will accommodate 1 240 learners. The school consists of 32 classrooms, one multimedia centre, two multi-purpose classrooms and one science lab.
• The new secondary school in Zwelethemba, Worcester will accommodate 1 200 learners. The school consists of 33 classrooms, one multimedia centre, two multi-purpose classrooms and five science labs.
• The new high school in Worcester will accommodate 1 200 learners. The school consists of 33 classrooms, one multimedia centre, two multi-purpose classrooms and five science labs.
• For years, learners at the Louwville High School in Vredenburg have been using temporary classrooms. The new school will accommodate 1 380 learners, as well as sports fields and other amenities. It consists of 38 classrooms, five science laboratory rooms, two specialist classrooms, and a multi-purpose classroom.

The Western Cape Government invests heavily in building and refurbishing school infrastructure across the province. These infrastructure and maintenance projects provide high-quality teaching and learning facilities, and help to meet the growing demand for schooling.

This gives expression to Provincial Strategic Goal 2 – to improve education outcomes and opportunities for youth development.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has budgeted a total of R1,29 billion in 2016/17 for building and refurbishing school infrastructure across the Western Cape. DTPW and WCED are pleased to have delivered schools that residents can be proud of; places where quality education can take place and learners can grow.
