New vaccination site opened to public as roll-out continues

Western Cape Government Health has opened a new vaccination site at the Goodwood Civic Centre which is set to vaccinate approximately 400 residents a day.

The vaccination facility opened its doors on Thursday, 15 July 2021, with eight, indoor vaccination stations, and the Department aims to increase its capacity in the coming weeks.

Rika Ressel, aged 87, was one of the first community members to receive her vaccine at the Goodwood Civic Centre. Ms Ressel and her daughter, who accompanied her, thanked staff for running an “efficient service”.

“The process went very well. Why would you not take the vaccine? I encourage all residents get their vaccinations to protect themselves.”

Sadick Simon has a heart condition and says he had fears about taking the vaccine. Mr Simon is 74 years old and had open-heart surgery nearly 10 years ago.

“I am excited to be here today for my health. I had COVID-19 seven months ago, it was like my soul left my body, but I survived. I am still here today and I’m getting my vaccine for my health.”

Devi and Ronny Venkatasu registered on the Electronic Vaccination Data System. The couple, married for more than 40 years, has encouraged residents to register for vaccination.

“We decided to get our vaccine to protect us, it’s like any other vaccine, like polio or measles. We don’t see why we can’t take this vaccine if it’s here to protect us. Government has made so much effort to get it here for us. God gives wisdom to people to do things and I think he’s given wisdom to people to make the vaccine. We believe in God, but we also believe in the medical profession. I know some of us are scared, but we need to have faith.”

PRIORITY GROUPS FOR VACCINATION

Registration has opened for residents who are 35 years old and older. However, vaccination of this age band is only to be scheduled from 1 August. We discourage 35 – 49-year-old citizens from presenting as walk ins at sites. Our sites continue to prioritise bookings and can accommodate a limited number of walk ins.

Our priority for walk ins remains the same in principle:

• Priority 1 people 60 years and older requiring their 1st dose of Pfizer vaccine
• Priority 2 people 60 years and older requiring their 2nd dose of Pfizer vaccine
• Priority 3 people aged 50 -59 years requiring their 1st dose of Pfizer vaccine

The number of walk ins that can be accommodated depends on the available capacity and vaccine doses available at each individual site.
