Multi-million rand health infrastructure projects commence

15 April 2016

The construction of three much-needed health infrastructure projects commissioned by the Department of Transport and Public Works for the Western Cape Department of Health began on 14 April 2016. If everything goes according to plan, the facilities will be completed in October 2017. These projects help to give effect to the Healthcare 2030 aim of providing high-quality health facilities at district hospital and primary healthcare level.

Work on the R34 million emergency centre at Stellenbosch Hospital project includes the building of triage rooms, a triage waiting area, a new ambulance canopy, a new outpatient department, staff areas, and stores. In addition, the entrance, parking areas, sidewalks and external public spaces will be upgraded, and a covered walkway will be extended to the main hospital entrance. Once completed, the facility will offer a 24-hour emergency service. A total of 15% of the contract value is expected to go to targeted enterprises, 7% to suppliers and manufacturers, and 8% to local labour.

Community day centres are being built in Prince Alfred Hamlet and Wolseley in the Witzenberg Municipality at a cost of R31 million and R25 million respectively. Both centres will offer a full range of primary healthcare facilities for therapy and rehabilitation, as well as for mother and baby care. They will also have dental surgeries, pharmacies, as well as specialised infectious disease and chronic disease units. External works will incorporate a number of soft and hard landscape features, as well as a small amount of parking. A total of 10% of the contract value is expected to go to targeted enterprises, 7% to suppliers and manufacturers, and 8% to local labour. The two community day centre projects will also create Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities for six women, 13 youth, and one disabled person.

The Western Cape Government’s Provincial Strategic Goal 1 aims to improve wellness in the province. By delivering quality health facilities, on time, where they are needed most, the Department of Transport and Public Works is living its mission of delivering infrastructure and services to promote positive socio-economic outcomes and safe, empowered and connected communities.
