More than 500 applications for Syferfontein, George FLISP project

2 August 2021

The 520 applications that have been received in the Finance Linked Individual Subsidy (FLISP) part of the Syferfontein Housing project in George, is a clear demonstration of the need for affordable housing opportunities.

The Syferfontein project, which is an Integrated Residential Development Programme (IRDP), has a budget of R 434 million and commenced in August 2018. The development will deliver a total of 2 113 housing opportunities to accommodate different income categories. Sites have also been reserved for socio-economic facilities.

To date 972 houses have been completed and this is inclusive of 147 FLISP opportunities earmarked for persons who do not qualify for a fully subsidised house.

It‘s pleasing to note that since 4 July to date, 648 people have viewed the FLISP units in this project. Although the high turnout exceeds the supply, the interest serves as encouragement to continue making more affordable housing opportunities available to our people across the Western Cape.

The demand for FLISP units further confirms why our focus on creating affordable housing opportunities is the correct strategy to follow. We want to ensure that those with a household income between R 3 501 – R 22 000 are presented with options, as they earn too much for a fully subsidised house.

In the new financial year, the Department will launch phase 2 of the affordable housing opportunities earmarked for persons earning above R 3 501.

Through this we are enabling residents to accrue assets which not only give them security but can also be leveraged. This ultimately ensures that families can start to change the financial circumstances of generations to follow.

As the Western Cape Government, we remain committed to accelerating human settlement delivery, while promoting social inclusion through the development of integrated, resilient, safe and sustainable human settlements in an open opportunity society.
