MOD Production Skywalker thrills audiences

23 September 2019

On 20 and 21 September 2019, 47 learners from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s (DCAS) MOD Programme thrilled audiences in a packed Joseph Stone Theatre in Athlone with their production called Skywalker.

This production was the culmination of a six month talent identification process which took place at MOD Centres and Neighbouring schools right across the Western Cape province. At the end of this process, 47 learners were chosen to be part of Skywalker, which told the story of young boy who is imprisoned and who longs for his father who disappeared from his life. The production touched on issues such as the need for children to have adult role models as well as gender-based violence. It gave learners the opportunity to showcase their dance, acting and juggling talents.

The show was opened by Chad van Rooyen, who was part of a previous MOD Production in 2013. Chad participated in MOD Programmes for most of his High school career and is a true success story, as he now pursues his career on stage and screen. Sport Development Director Paul Hendricks encouraged the cast of the production to follow Chad’s example and use the opportunities available to them. “Chad participated in the MOD Programme but he also committed to hours and hours of practice and that is what has contributed to his success.” Hendricks said.

DCAS Head of Department Brent Walters opened the production on Saturday evening. “For some of the cast, this evening is their first time performing on a stage in front of an audience. We want them to go on and do great things in their lives and to contribute to the overall development of the Western Cape. It is an honour for us to host them and we hope this will have a lasting impact on their lives.” he said.

Standing Committee Chairman Reagen Allen was also in attendance, as well as member Peter Marais. Both members commended the cast for an excellent performance. Minister Anroux Marais also attended the Friday evening performance and told the cast they has staged a “world class” production.

DCAS continues to offer the MOD and After School Programmes across the province to offer learners safe spaces where they can develop and grow their talents in order to gain opportunities for a successful future.
