Minister Simmers reaffirms commitment for greater Hermanus housing development

5 February 2020

Yesterday, Western Cape Human Settlements Minister, Tertuis Simmers, met with the Overstrand Municipality, where he once again reiterated the Provincial Department of Human Settlements’ (DoHS) commitment for the Greater Hermanus Housing Development.

The engagement consisted of the Head of the Department and senior officials, joined by the Mayor of Overstrand, along with senior municipal officials.

Minister Simmers said: “I commend the Municipality who also reaffirmed their willingness to ensure that this project gets off the ground. It is vital we start making progress with the implementation of this project. We’ve had many unnecessary and avoidable delays.

I will therefore, later this month engage the Greater Hermanus Stakeholders Forum (GHSF), to discuss where the process currently is, while proposing how to move forward.

This project has the potential to completely transform this area’s landscape. More than this though, it will benefit thousands of the most deserving residents in this area.

I therefore call on communities to not allow themselves to be misled by so-called community leaders who do not have their best interest at heart and whose only objective is to disrupt this entire process.

As the Western Cape Government, we remain committed to accelerating human settlement delivery, while promoting social inclusion through the development of integrated, resilient and sustainable human settlements in an open opportunity and safe society.
