Minister Plato hosts Khayelitsha cluster PNP consultation

18 August 2016

This weekend, Friday 19 August 2016 and Saturday 20 August 2016, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, Dan Plato, will host the Policing Needs and Priorities determination consultation sessions for the Khayelitsha policing cluster.

The engagements will take the format of a two-day consultative workshop and will include representatives of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Municipalities, Community Police Forums (CPFs), Community Safety Forums (CSF), non-governmental organisations, community based organisations, faith based organisations, Neighbourhood Watches (NHW), and other local safety stakeholders.

On Friday, 19 August 2016, Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, will attend while the Department of Health addresses the safety fraternity present on the challenges faced by EMS staff, with the view of working towards implementable and sustainable solutions in addressing the safety concerns of both those living and working within our communities.

As part of Minister Plato’s opening address he will also provide feedback on the progress made and challenges faced in implementing the recommendations as made by the Khayelitsha Commission of Inquiry. The Commission completed its work and handed over its final report and recommendations to the Premier on 25 August 2014.

This weekend’s consultation sessions forms part of the annual determination of the policing needs and priorities in the province which will see the Department of Community Safety hold public consultation sessions for each of the 16 police clusters between May and October this year.

A key feature of the 2016/17 PNP process will be the extensive training provided to Neighbourhood Watches and Community Policing Forums – the pulse of citizen-led safety interventions in our communities.

This weekend, 19 - 20 August 2016, the communities of Gordons Bay, Harare, Khayelitsha, Lingelethu-West, Lwandle, Macassar, Somerset West and Strand have the opportunity to determine their policing needs and priorities and to contribute to the Safety Plan, as a safety blueprint for communities which provides a shared ownership, responsibility and accountability to safety.
