Minister Nomafrench Mbombo commissions Victoria Hospitals new emergency centre

15 June 2021

On Tuesday 15 June 2021, Minister Nomafrench Mbombo, officially opened the Victoria Hospital’s new Emergency Center.  The previous emergency unit, served as a temporary for 49 years.  Staff and Health Facility Board members were ecstatic that patients will now have access to a more spacious and modern space for emergency services.

CEO of Victoria Hospital, Mr Jonathan Vaughan, shared a brief history of the hospital as it has provided services to the community since 1889.  “Today is an exciting day when we can celebrate the realising of a dream where the excellence in emergency care at Victoria Hospital can be provided in state of the art facilities. This is the latest chapter in the story of the Hospital and it’s dedication to the health of the community. From the time the hospital was built in 1889 Victoria Hospital has strived to serve the needs of the community and the new Emergency Centre and its excellent staff will enable this for many years to come.”

A new initiative, the #IBHALANSI Campaign, was launched by Minister Nomafrench  Mbombo on the day.  The campaign aims to assure the residents of the Western Cape that amidst the COVID-19 pandemic the province will still be able to deal with the increasing number of trauma cases and other Non-COVID cases, whilst escalating vaccinations.   “We have learned a lot during the 1st and 2nd waves of COVID-19. We need to maintain the balance between providing care for the COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 cases. People who have suffered with a stroke or heart attack, for example, will still need to be assisted in the same facility. Just because there is a pandemic, it does not mean that people will not be sick. It means we need to ensure that there is a balance and that we allow people with COVID-19 into the system and keep them safe whilst providing for the non-COVID-19 cases and also keeping them safe.”
