Minister Meyer Hands over Chess Sets to Rocklands Library

11 June 2012

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, will hand over an outdoor chess set as well as chess boards to Rocklands Library on 12 June 2012 at 15:00. The handover forms part of Dr Meyer's plan to encourage every library in the Western Cape to provide the youth with access to the game of chess.

According to Minister Meyer, chess teaches us valuable life lessons. It teaches us that one has to:

  • 1. Have a plan.
  • 2. Make a move and take personal responsibility for the move.
  • 3. Moves (actions) have consequences.

Rocklands Library can be located at the corner of Park and Spine Road, Rocklands, Mitchell's Plain.

It is almost 20 years to the day since South Africa was re-admitted to the international arena. The SA Olympiad team that participated in the Philippines included Adv Lyndon Bouah (who will be present at the handover) and also Adv Maxwell Solomon, a native son of Mitchell's Plain.

The SA Chess Open, which will be held in Cape Town from 29 June to 8 July, will include Grandmasters from Portugal, France and Egypt.

Dr Meyer will be accompanied by Mr Eldo Smart, President of Western Province Chess.
