Minister Meyer attends MGRO 1 session

16 September 2015

Provincial Treasury yesterday kicked off the 2015 round of the now well established Municipal Governance, Review and Outlook 1 (MGRO1) contact sessions between Provincial Treasury and municipalities in the Western Cape.

Themed Sustainable Local Governance: Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future, the 2015 MGRO 1 sessions will specifically be focussing on the extent to which governance, financial and economic sustainability within municipalities can be improved over the short and long term.

Speaking at the MGRO 1 session in Worcester earlier today, Western Cape Minister of Finance Dr Ivan Meyer, highlighted the current economic challenges facing South Africa and the importance of municipalities being in a position to effectively respond to the potential threat it poses to the future sustainability of the municipality.

The response must be informed by an understanding of the science of delivery. “This requires a municipality to understand the problem/s it faces,  identifying desired outcomes in response to the identified problem/s, developing a plan to achieve the desired outcomes and finally effectively implementing credible assessment tools to measure whether the outcomes have been realised or not”: said the Minister.

The MGRO 1 session will move to Laingsburg later this week and Eden Region next week.
