On Saturday, 7 November 2020, Minister Anroux Marais congratulated those who participated in the first of its kind Metropole Virtual Big Walk as they collected their medals and shields at Fairmount High School in Grassy Park.
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with one of the Western Province Athletics Clubs innovatively delivered the Virtual Big Walk event, aligned to the Association For International Sport for All (TAFISA) - World Walking Day Initiative from 4 October to 25 October 2020.
With more than 1000 entrants and free entries made available to Western Cape Government employees, funds were raised to support this year’s beneficiaries: The League of the Friends of the Blind (LOFOB), The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Fairmount High School.
At the medal ceremony and beneficiary cheque handover, Minister Marais thanked all who had a hand in the success of the event as well as all those who participated.
Minister Marais said, “As we practice sport and recreation in our new norm, partnerships of this nature are pivotal for the sustainability of the code and to create the enabling environment needed to encourage physical activity within our communities whilst adhering to the compulsory health and safety protocols. We thank our team in recreation wholeheartedly for their exceptional work done in service of our communities and valued beneficiaries. Under difficult circumstances, they continued to promote wellness at a time when it was most needed and indeed became innovative in delivering an event in which community walking groups and runners in development could safely move forward living healthier lifestyles in safer environments. Thank you is an understatement”.
As the trusted partner of our sport and cultural stakeholders, those affecting dynamic change in behavioural trends at grassroots level, we remain committed to empowering them and the various structures through innovative assistance and interventions as the need and demand transpires.
