Minister Madikizela To Hand Over Wupperthal Site

5 March 2019

Tomorrow, Wednesday 6 March 2019, the Western Cape Human Settlements Minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, will hand over the Wupperthal site to a contractor to resume the project of erecting temporary housing in Wupperthal.

This follows a Land Availability Agreement entered into by the provincial Department of Human Settlements, Moravian Church and the Cederberg Municipality.

On 30 December 2018 a fire swept through the town burning down 53 houses, a school hostel and razing other infrastructure to the ground, leaving approximately 200 people homeless.

The Department of Human Settlements has approved funding for the provision of temporary modular housing units and associated infrastructure in Wupperthal and a service provider has been appointed for the provision of temporary housing.

The construction of the units will resume tomorrow (Wednesday) and the project is expected to be completed within 12 weeks.

Minister Madikizela will be joined by Cederberg Mayor, William Farmer and Moravian Church President, Rev Godfrey Cunningham during the handover.
