Minister Madikizela Attends Sod Turning Ceremony at Buffeljagsrivier

25 August 2014

On Tuesday 5 August 2014, Western Cape Human Settlements Minister, Bonkinkosi Madikizela, attended a sod turning ceremony at the site of a new housing development in Buffeljagsrivier, in Swellendam.

“This initiative forms part of Human Settlement’s commitment to building communities, not just houses. We know that in the right environment, with the right opportunities, our residents can thrive”, said Minister Madikizela.

The project represents one of the Departments strategic objectives to continue to provide free housing opportunities for those who most need them, and also to ensure that those who receive houses are also empowered through receiving title deeds to their properties. According to the Minister, “the project will benefit the most deserving beneficiaries in the Buffeljagsrivier community”.

Construction of this project is scheduled to commence in November 2014. This project will be divided into two sites (Site A and Site B), in total these sites will have 91 units and 115 sites, with a total budget of R3 271 950.

The development will cover an area of 4.92 hectares, which abuts the railway line to the north, the existing development to the west, two storage dams to the east and vacant land to the south.

The construction site has nine existing structures which are not fully connected to the municipal services. The site is accessed via an existing gravel road traversing the site. There is no formal registered servitude for this Divisional Road and therefore a road reserve of 16 meters has been proposed. Since the land is located next to an existing housing development, there is easy access to social amenities.

Construction is expected to be complete by November 2015.
