Minister Grant Condemns Acts of Vandalism in Nyanga

1 September 2014

Statement by Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works

This morning, I received distressing news of vicious acts of vandalism carried out by a group of angry and violent protesters in Nyanga. There are reports of one fatal shooting. The vandals torched six Golden Arrow buses, adversely affecting the bus service in the area.

As Minister, I condemn such acts of vandalism in the strongest terms. The perpetrators of these very serious crimes must be made to face the full might of the law. We will support all efforts to ensure that this happens, and that these criminals are brought to book for their crimes. Their acts have not only interrupted the provision of reliable public transport to the hundreds of thousands that use buses daily in and around the city, but have also threatened the safety of commuters.

The on-going negative impact on the economy of such disruption, including the closure of the N2 for a short period, is obvious. The N2 has been re-opened and traffic is flowing.
