Metro Police Arrested Seventeen (17) Motorists for Drunk Driving in Nyanga

16 August 2010

During the past weekend the Metro Police continued their campaign to reduce crime, road accidents and fatalities caused by drunk drivers.

On the afternoon of Sunday 15 August, Metro Police arrested seventeen (17) motorists in Nyanga for driving under the influence of alcohol. This follows the arrest of forty three (43) motorists in Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha and Hout Bay on Friday and Saturday night.

On Sunday morning, Metro Police arrested one suspect for possession of narcotics in Broadway Village, Strand.

The officers were conducting routine patrols when they spotted a group of men behaving suspiciously outside a house in Broadway Village. When the officers approached the group, they ran away, leaving a small bag of TIK behind them.

The Metro Police then searched the house and confiscated the following items:

  • four (4) large bags of TIK
  • one (1) small bag of TIK
  • six thousand four hundred rand (R6 400) in cash

"Once again, we would like to appeal to the public to please take the rules of the road seriously. Metro Police Officers are on the lookout for anyone disobeying these rules, especially those driving drunk. Our officers will continue their high visibility patrols and will conduct regular roadblocks and house searches where necessary," said Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro.
