Melkbosstrand roadworks almost complete

2 November 2016

A R71 million Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project to reseal and upgrade 27 km of the R27 and 8 km of the M19 near Melkbosstrand is progressing well.

This project started in September 2015 and is scheduled for completion by the end of this year. Up to 12 000 vehicles travel on these roads every day, which was last resealed in 1997.

Intersection upgrades, repairs to drainage structures, refurbishment of bridges, and double-sealing of the M19 have been completed. The R27 is currently being double-sealed, and there are lane closures where work is under way.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) employment and skills training opportunities. Contract expenditure on targeted enterprises currently stands at R5,3 million. A total of 7 140 person-days of work have been created so far for persons from the City of Cape Town municipal area.

The Department is aware that delays are frustrating, but some delays during construction are inevitable. Motorists are already benefitting from a safer and more pleasant travelling experience on the R27 and M19.
