Media Statement: Sakkie Jenner on passing of Robbie Jansen
It is with a great sense of loss that the Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation, Mr Sakkie Jenner, learnt of the passing of Cape Town Jazz Maestro, Robbie Jansen.
A leading figure in the Cape Town jazz fraternity Robbie Jansen has left an indelible mark on the musical landscape of the Western Cape and South Africa. During his illustrious career Robbie Jansen received numerous awards from the Provincial government of the Western Cape. In 2004 he received an award in the Music category at the Annual Provincial Arts and Culture Awards and this was followed by a Life-time Achiever Award in 2006. Robbie Jansen, the entertainer, brilliant saxophonist, respected composer and arranger played a leading role in establishing a style which was to become known as Cape Jazz. Starting out in the mid 1970's with Pacific Express and Dollar Brand, Robbie Jansen worked tirelessly throughout the turbulent eighties with former partner, Basil "Manenberg Coetzee and Sabenza. Their performances at various political and cultural events across the country played a key role in cementing the central role of culture in the anti-apartheid struggle.
"On behalf of the people of the Western Cape I extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Robbie Jansen," said Minister Jenner.
"Robbie Jansen was as synonymous with Cape Town and the Western Cape as Table Mountain, the South Easter blowing in the mother city, the Minstrels and the flower sellers, the snoek runs, and the diverse, rich cultural sounds of the people of the Western Cape. Through his music Robbie Jansen epitomised the tenacity, the fighting spirit, the defiance and the hopes and aspirations of a whole generation of young people who were determined to change the political landscape of this province and this country. Robbie Jansen the virtuoso on the alto saxophone and flute, singer, cultural activist and music mentor will be heard no more. This legend will, however, continue to live through his music and the many fond memories that so many have of him," says Jenner.
