Media Alert: Western Cape Mourns The Loss Of Senzo Miyewa

Media Statement by Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport

It is a very sad day for our country as we mourn the untimely, violent death of Senzo Miyewa, Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain and goalkeeper.

It is clear from the tributes that are pouring in that he was a respected member of our country’s sporting fraternity. We have not only lost a sport star, but someone who was a role-model and inspiration for the younger generations.

Sport is one of the greatest uniting forces of a country. It is something that brings people together. This is especially true in our country. We need role-models for our children to encourage them to push themselves to achieve, so that they can become successful in whatever they do. Senzo Miyewa was a hero to many young children who dream of becoming professional sport stars and we honour him for what he has meant to our country.

It is unacceptable that many young South African who have bright futures ahead of them, like Senzo, are losing their lives to violence on a daily basis. We call on the public to assist SAPS in tracking down and arresting the perpetrators of Sunday’s attack.

We send our deepest condolences to Senzo’s family, friends and teammates at this difficult time.
