Media Alert: Premier Zille and Minister Winde to Officially Launch WiFi Hotpsots

26 August 2014

On 27 August 2014, Premier Helen Zille, Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde and Western Cape Minister of Education, Debbie Schafer, will officially launch another WiFi hotspot, part of the project which will link 50 000 Western Cape residents to public internet.

This forms part of the Western Cape Government’s R1.3 billion broadband rollout plan.

The launch in Atlantis is one of four taking place this year. Others include George, Robertson and Delft.

In November last year, the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, opened the call for proposals for non-profit organisations (NPOs) to access grant funding to set up free Wi-Fi zones. Minister Winde said the models used by the different NPOs become the test cases the Western Cape Government will consider going forward.

The launch is a result of this initiative and will boost the province’s efforts to connect the public to WiFi across the province.

The Western Cape Government’s goal is that every resident in this province will have access to affordable internet, which will connect them with employment and education opportunities. This is a major asset for communities and we look forward to seeing the real benefits of connectivity in terms of growth and job creation.

All media are invited to attend. There will be opportunities for interviews and photographs.
