Media Alert: Minister Mbombo to Cap Western Cape’s Indigenous Games Team

Tomorrow, 19 September 2014, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, will host a capping ceremony for Team Western Cape that will be jetting off to Tshwane for the National Indigenous Games festival that will take place from 21 – 24 September 2014.

The National Sport and Recreation Plan places Indigenous Games as a priority sport code in the country. Special focus has been given to these games as one of the avenues for mass participation and active participation in traditional and indigenous games. These games are now competed in nine different sporting codes and Western Cape is part of the nine provinces competing at the inter-provincial festival.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport embarked on a process to re-establish Indigenous Games (IG) structures in the Western Cape in accordance with its Annual Performance Plan, and in alignment with the National Sport and Recreation Plan (NSRP).

Team Western Cape is preparing to compete in some of the following games: Dibeke; Diketo; Drie Stokkies; Iintonga; Jukskei;  Kgati; Kho – kho; Morabaraba and Ncuva.

There will be opportunities for interviews and photographs.
