Media Alert: Launch of Safely Home Fatigue Management Campaign

Under the banner of the Western Cape's Safely Home Campaign, the Department of Community Safety together with the Department of Transport will launch a two month provincial Fatigue Management Campaign tomorrow night (Friday 4 June, 2010).

Community Safety MEC Lennit Max and Transport MEC Robin Carlisle will be at the campaign's first Fatigue Management roadblock to be set up on the N1 outside Laingsburg to monitor driver fatigue, whilst also focusing on traffic law enforcement. (Unroadworthiness, public transport vehicles).

Due to the high traffic rate on this road it is essential that fatigue be highlighted as a crash risk and the campaign sees driver education on fatigue indicators as well as strategies for managing fatigue.

The N1 between Beaufort West and Cape Town carries an average of forty thousand (40 000) trucks, twenty thousand (20 000) light motor vehicles and ten thousand (10 000) public transport vehicles per month.
