Mayor Supports Budding Musicians in Langa

20 January 2011

The City of Cape Town with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra delivered 20 violins to the Siyabulela Primary school in Langa today, 21 January 2011.

The donation is the result of the Masidlale Music Project - a development programme run by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) and funded by the City, which prepares young learners for a spot in the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

It takes 15 years of intensive training to prepare a learner for an orchestra - a dream which is often not feasible for disadvantaged learners. The City has put forward R162 000, which is intended for training and facilitator fees and the purchase of instruments.

The City's Arts and Culture Department has worked with the CPO to set up a satellite school in Langa which trains learners as young as five to play musical instruments. This school will provide cultural education for the youth - especially those whose families do not have the financial means to pay for music lessons themselves.

The satellite school, situated at the Siyabulela Primary School in Washington Street, Langa will be officially opened on 4 February 2011.

Two satellite teaching centres currently operate in Gugulethu and Nyanga and the aim is to start seven new projects across the city.

"Cape Town is the arts and culture hub of South Africa, but many of our residents still do not have the resources to explore and optimise their talents. Initiatives like the Masidlale Music Project make music more accessible," said the City's Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.
