Mandela Day: Department hosts 67 manicures for 67 grannies

18 July 2016

The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) has honoured the memory of Nelson Mandela by devoting 67 minutes to provide 67 older persons with manicures.

The grannies, from Mitchell’s Plain and surrounding areas, were treated to a morning of pampering, treats and hand massages.

The manicures and treatments were provided by 20 young ladies who are part of the department's Social Makeover Project (SMP).

The SMP is an initiative in partnership with Old Mutual, and the Imbalie Group. The project targeted 20 women from Mitchell's Plain who were not in employment, education or training, seeking to transform their lives and futures. These 20 women have completed an intensive 10 week personal development and empowerment programme.

In addition the young women also completed a highly acclaimed course in nail therapy run by Imbalie Training Academy. The SMP then places these women in permanent employment in areas best suited for each women.

The department would also like to thank Old Mutual, McDonald’s (Mitchells plain) and NGO partner, Baitul Ansaar, for sponsoring today’s event.
