Louwville High School expected to be ready for 2017 academic year

29 April 2016

The Department of Transport and Public Works is making good progress with the construction of the new Louwville High School in Vredenburg. The new facility, which is expected to be ready for the 2017 academic year, will provide top-quality accommodation for 1 380 learners currently housed in temporary classrooms on the site.

This R65 million project was commissioned by the Department of Transport and Public Works for the Western Cape Education Department. Most of the school buildings will comprise a framed concrete structure and a mixture of face brick and painted infill walls.

Teaching facilities will comprise:

  • 19 junior classrooms,
  • 19 senior classrooms,
  • five science laboratory rooms,
  • two specialist classrooms and a multi-purpose classroom.

The complex will also have:

  • a hall with toilet facilities,
  • an administrative building,
  • caretaker’s facilities, and
  • sports fields and other amenities.

The Department is committed to creating Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities through the project, including the vital skills training component. A total of R9.6 million is expected to go towards targeted contractor businesses, R3.8 million to suppliers and manufacturers, and R2 million to targeted local labour.

Currently, 61 local labour and subcontractors are working on the site, including four carpenters, four bricklayers and one steel fixer.

Construction began in February 2015 and is scheduled to have been completed in September 2016, provided that there are no unavoidable delays.

The Department remains committed to delivering infrastructure in communities where it is needed most.
