Late Professor Bongani Mayosi to Receive Official Provincial Funeral

2 August 2018

The late cardiologist, Professor Bongani Mayosi will be afforded a Special Provincial Official Funeral, Category 2.

“Upon learning of his tragic and untimely passing, I wrote to President Cyril Ramaphosa and requested an official funeral for Professor Mayosi, whose work and contribution is internationally acclaimed,” said Premier Zille.

Professor Mayosi had previously been awarded the Order of Mapungubwe in 2009. Recipients of national orders may be afforded an official funeral in terms of the National Ministerial Handbook criteria, which states “distinguished persons specifically designated by the President of the Republic”.

Premier Zille said: “Prof Mayosi’s passing is a real tragedy - a giant has fallen. The science and health sectors, and our country in general, are poorer for the loss of this acclaimed academic. I wish to once again extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones.”

The Funeral Planning Committee (FPC) consulted with the family, and it has been determined that funeral service will take place on Saturday, 4 August at 08:30 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
