A title deed is an important document because it is the only legal document that proves that a person owns a certain property, says the Minister of Human Settlements Nomaindiya Mfeketo.

Minister Mfeketo was speaking today at the handover of houses and 2000 title deeds to beneficiaries in Delft Precinct 7, Cape Town.

“Without this document (title deed), a person cannot be assured that a property is his or hers. It is therefore important for any person selling or buying a house to follow the legal route in doing so,” said Mfeketo.

Minister Mfeketo also discouraged beneficiaries from selling their houses. “But in case a person decides to do so, please use the services of estate agents, lawyers and inform the municipality to ensure such a deal is legitimate,” added the Mfeketo.

Minister Mfeketo was accompanied by the Deputy Minister Zou Kota Fredericks, Western Cape Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela and other Human Settlements MEC’s from different provinces.

Minister Madikizela expressed his satisfaction regarding the progress at Delft, “This is a good project as government we need to ensure that necessary amenities are available to the people,” said Madikizela.

Earlier, Minister Mfeketo visited resident at Delft Precinct 7 to hand over title deeds and houses to beneficiaries in the area.

One of the beneficiaries Ms Magaza (79), previously lived in Langa township as a backyard dweller before receiving her house in 2016. She is a pensioner and she stays alone. “I am very with happy to have received my house and now the title deed, I am told that it means I completely own this house, this is a wonderful gift for an old lady like me,” said Magaza.

Delft is part of N2 Gateway project which involves the development of fully subsidised, rental and affordable bonded homes along the N2 highway in the Western Cape.

As a national government-led priority project, the N2 Gateway which started in 2005 is intended to address historic and endemic problems associated with rapid urbanisation, poverty and homelessness in the area.

The National Department through its implementing agent Housing Development Agency (HDA) is working in close collaboration with the Western Cape Provincial Department of Human Settlements and the City of Cape Town to deliver about 15 000 homes to communities in five precincts: New Rest, Delft 7-9 and Delft Symphony, Boystown and Joe Slovo. The commitment of all parties to building human settlements that promote human dignity and creating healthy and cohesive communities has been identified as vital to the success of the project.

Phase one of the N2 Gateway project is almost complete, with over 12 000 units handed over to beneficiaries to date.
