Jazz Festival Workshops Inspire Emerging Musicians

9 April 2013

“African’s grandest gathering”, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF), hosted a variety of workshops in and around the city from 30 March to 6 April 2013. The programme included master classes with visiting jazz artists as well as workshops on arts journalism and photography.

Master classes and urban master classes facilitated by Camilo Lombard on 5 and 6 April 2013 harnessed the talents of great international musicians such as Jack Dejonette and Gregory Porter. The urban master class hosted by Bokani Dyer and Sakhile Moleshe on 5 April featured the Robert Glasper Experiment. Many South African jazz lovers attended these events and were inspired by what they saw and heard.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) provided R100 000 for the event from its cultural tourism budget. The Department’s emphasis during the CTIJF was on the development of semi-professional and professional local musicians.

William Masemola of the DCAS Cultural Affairs directorate says, “Master classes inspire participants to gain confidence and develop their talent.” DCAS has planned to provide support a number of major events and will actively make use of the talent development opportunities that these festivals present.

Josias Pila from the national Department of Arts and Culture said the arts journalism workshop will help him be a more effective communication officer. “It offered valuable insight into arts journalism. Knowing how journalists in the sector operate provided vital information for my line of work.”

The CTIJF is made possible by a partnership between the organisers and the national Department of Arts and Culture, the South African Broadcasting Corporation, DCAS and other sponsors.

DCAS is working better together with others to promote and develop the talents of local musicians in order to help them to earn a living out of what they enjoy doing.
