Housing Development Projects Across Cape Town On Track

3 June 2019

Western Cape Human Settlements Minister, Tertuis Simmers, says he is pleased with the steady progress that various housing development projects are making across the City of Cape Town.

On Friday, 31 May, Minister Simmers and Provincial Departmental officials visited various sites, which includes the Belhar CBD, - Forest Village, - Highbury Park, - Penhill, - Ithemba, -Taiwan, - Thabo Mbeki – and Barcelona projects, to get a first-hand account of the headway that the projects are making.

Each of these project are at various stages of completion and are expected to yield a combined total of 48 690 housing opportunities by 2022.

Units of a high standard are being built. Those for the disabled, includes wheelchair ramps and railings, while green alternative building technology (GABT) have also been incorporated into these developments.

Minister Simmers said: “I commend the Department’s officials and contractors who are working at a rapid pace to ensure that houses are delivered to the most vulnerable and needy in our communities. The visit has shown me first-hand the provincial government’s commitment to restoring dignity and creating a better life for people living in the province.

However, despite our continued delivery, our backlog continues to grow in the face of an increasing population and a shrinking budget. It is therefore critical that we focus are finding innovative and creative ways to make our budget stretch further, including upgrading informal settlements and unlocking opportunities for the affordable/GAP market; so that we provide opportunities to more people.

Said Simmers: “Over the next few weeks, I will be visiting more sites across the province and engage with communities to monitor progress and to pick up on any potential issues that might be hampering the delivery of projects, which need to be addressed.”
