High Number of Vehicles Screened for Speeding this Weekend

On 22 and 23 August 2014,  24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 728 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

A total of 1 224 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 26 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Swellendam at 1.08 mg/1 000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

The number of vehicles screened for speeding was 19 488 of which 2 149 speeding offences were recorded.

Two hundred and sixty eight (268) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness, to the amount of R298 800.

The highest speeds which were recorded:

  • 177 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 161 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.

There were four other arrests:

  • 3 x Impounded (Somerset west).
  • 1 x False Documentation (Brackenfell).

This weekend six fatalities were reported:

  • 1 x Passenger (R300 Kuilsriver).
  • 1 x Pedestrian (Vredenburg).
  • 1 x Pregnant Pedestrian (R 44 Klapmuts).
  • 2 x Pedestrians (N7 Du Noon).
  • 1 x Pedestrian (Citrusdal).
