Fourteen Killed on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

From 28 to 30 August 2015, Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 366 vehicles in 22 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape. Fourteen road users died on the province’s roads this weekend.

A total of 1 455 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 23 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Vredenburg at 1.02 mg/1 000 ml. This is four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 756 vehicles were screened for speeding and 116 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 201 fines in the amount of R268 300 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness.

Highest Speed Recorded

  • 174 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort-west service area.

Five Other Arrests

  • One false documentation arrest in Caledon.
  • One false documentation arrest in Worcester.
  • One reckless and negligent driving arrest in Somerset West.
  • One reckless and negligent driving arrest in Brackenfell.
  • One minibus taxi impoundment arrest in Knysna.

  • Lentegeur – 1 pedestrian
  • Table View – 1 driver

Central Karoo:

  • Prins Albert Road – 1 driver and 1 passenger

Winelands /Overberg:

  • Worcester – 1 driver

Greater Cape Metropole:

  • Kraaifontein – 1 driver
  • Du Noon – 1 motorcyclist
  • Strand – 1 pedestrian

Eden:

  • Plettenberg Bay – 1 pedestrian

Central Karoo:

  • Oudtshoorn – 1 driver

Greater Cape Metropole:

  • Macassar – 1 driver and 2 passengers
  • Heideveld – 1 pedestrian
