Eighteen Road Traffic Fatalities on Western Cape Roads

From 11 to 13 September 2015, Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 441 vehicles in 21 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape. Eighteen road users died on the province’s roads this weekend.

A total of 1 467 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 21 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Caledon. At 1.22 mg/1 000 ml, this is five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 9 838 vehicles were screened for speeding and 853 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 260 fines in the amount of R 371 650 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness.

Highest Speeds Recorded

  • 182 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 112 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the R62 in the Oudtshoorn service area.

Two Other Arrests

  • One reckless and negligent driving arrest in Somerset West.
  • One dagga arrest in Beaufort West.

  • Fish Hoek – 1 motorcyclist.
  • Kenilworth – 1 pedestrian.

Eden

  • Heidelberg – 2 drivers and 5 passengers.

Cape Metropole:

  • Pinelands – 1 driver.

West Coast:

  • Clanwilliam – 1 passenger.

Cape Metropole:

  • Maitland – 1 pedestrian.
  • Steenberg – 1 pedestrian.
  • Stellenbosch – 1 pedestrian.

Overberg:

  • Grabouw – 1 driver.

Cape Winelands:

  • Worcester – 1 driver and 1 passenger.
