Disaster Centre Covid-19 Alert 7

The Western Cape Disaster Management Centre and its stakeholders continues to enhance the ongoing enforcement of existing Covid-19 regulations and protocols within their respective mandates.

The Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, says a number of enforcement and awareness activities continue to be rolled out across the province in efforts to tackle the spread of the virus.

“Each department has a role. For example, the Provincial Department of Social Development is assisting old age homes with stricter control protocols and the department of agriculture is supporting farmers and rural communities with Covid-19 adherence and undertaking oversight visits in this regard.”

Bredell says the authorities continue to assess the situation on a daily basis and is doing everything within its power to address the pandemic.

“We simply ask cooperation and responsible behaviour from the public in the coming weeks.”

Some of the key steps currently being undertaken:

• The City of Cape Town will limit the number of visitors to picnic spots and braai areas in the 21 nature reserves it manages, over the festive season, starting from Saturday, 12 December 2020.
• In the City, the Metro Police will visit Night clubs and Pubs on an ongoing basis, to check compliance with the Disaster Management Regulations/Directives.

• Over the past weekend, the Western Cape Liquor Authority was involved in 103 enforcement operations.
• Tomorrow (Thursday) the Western Cape Transport and Public Works Minister, Bonginkosi Madikizela, will visit the West Coast District to raise awareness about the spread of Covid-19 in public transport. The Minister will visit the Bergrivier and Matzikama municipal areas.
• Random roadblocks and a 24/7 deployment of officials on major and secondary routes in the province continues to be rolled out.
• There will be increased enforcement and awareness efforts at malls, shebeens, clubs and public transport hubs.
• The Garden Route, Overberg and West Coast Districts are pushing hard on visible policing and focusing on driving social distancing and doing holiday preparations for the festive season.
