Developing Sporting Skills With Sport Equipment Handover

1 September 2015

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) and Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) hosted a handover of sporting equipment at the Witsands Multi-Purpose Centre in Atlantis on 31 August 2015.

Approximately 50 people from a total of 27 clubs and 9 schools from Atlantis attended the event. Various sporting equipment such as soccer, netball and rugby training and match balls, cricket and boxing equipment were handed over to very excited beneficiaries.

Charles Marthinussen, principal of Atlantis Secondary School thanked DCAS and SRSA for the resources. “Everything that we can receive to support sport at our schools is always welcome and appreciated” said Marthinussen. The local councillor, Ms Fiona Abrahams and the WCED representative, Mr Ralph Mahona, also added words of encouragement and expressed appreciation for the donation of the sporting equipment.

Mr Claude Meyer, DCAS Deputy Director for School Sport, emphasized the link between schools and clubs and highlighted the importance of the link and the fact that schools and clubs should work closer together. ‘It is important to continue working in communities and to encourage the youth to participate in sport’ said Meyer.

Mr Thabo Tutu, DCAS Director for Sport Promotion said the equipment that the various schools and clubs received should be used and schools and clubs should encourage learners to play sport after school. ‘Clubs should encourage learners to take part in sports events over weekends to develop their skills’ he said.  Mr Ishmail Madumo from SRSA thanked all the beneficiaries for availing themselves to attend the event.

Through partnerships with schools and clubs, DCAS offers people of the Western Cape the opportunity to hone their sporting skills and grow their talent. Let us create an active and fit province BETTER TOGETHER.
