Department Supports the Steinitz Chess Festival 2014

Eldo Smart, GM Aleksa Strkovic, Adv. Lyndon Bouah, GM Niaz Murshed, GM Sergey Kasparov, Minister Ivan Meyer, WIM Katazyn Toma, Deon Solomon and Elijah Emojong at the Grandmaster chess event.
The Steinitz Chess Club hosted the Steinitz International Chess Festival from 9 to 18 May 2014 with the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. A total of 273 players participated in the event.
The Grandmaster section was won by Grandmaster Aleksa Strikovic from Serbia with International Master Kenny Solomons from Mitchell’s Plain in second place. Grandmaster Sergei Kasparov from Belarus came third.
Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer congratulated Striovic on his victory. Dr Meyer said he was pleased to see so many grandmasters at one event in Cape Town so soon after his 2012 announcement of a “chess revolution” in the Western Cape.
