Department adheres to lockdown regulations in handing title deeds to elderly

Yesterday, 16 June 2020, the Head of the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements, Ms Jacqui Samson handed over title deeds to the community of Voorbrug in Delft.

The department’s senior executive continues to ensure that deserving residents, particularly the elderly become fully-fledged homeowners. This is even truer for this community as the Provincial Minister of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers handed them over 16 title deeds just about a week ago.

Among the happy beneficiaries are Katherina Zaal (76), wheelchair-bound Mabel Vollenhoven (73) and Marjorie Juries (70).

The title deed handover has been made possible through the Department’s Enhanced Extended Discounted Benefit Scheme (EEDBS), which promotes home ownership of pre-1994 government-owned rental housing. The particular handover today also forms part of the Department’s strategic goal to prioritise the elderly for housing opportunities in the Western Cape. 

Though the Enhanced Extended Discounted Benefit Scheme (EEDBS) the department settled their shortfall; hence they could get ownerships of the housing units.

The title deed handover is part of the Department’s strategic goal of prioritising the elderly by ensuring ownership of their properties. The department believes that handing over title deeds gives people a sense of security, dignity and pride in having full ownership of their properties.

Ms Samson said: “The occasion was emotional but joyous. I am particularly happy because these are our elderly citizens who are our priority as government. As the Western Cape Government, we remain committed to improving the lives of our residents especially the vulnerable groups including the elderly and people living disabilities,” said Ms Samson.
