Cheque Handovers Open Worlds for Libraries

12 April 2013

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, declared it as one of his many missions for 2013 to handover cheques to municipalities to support them as structures of knowledge and accessibility. On 8 April, George Municipality was visited to hand over cheques to the George Public Library and Conville Public Library, followed by Hessequa Municipality at Riversdale Public Library on 10 April and Theewaterskloof Municipality at Caledon Public Library on 11 April.

The libraries in these municipalities received a combined amount of R12 494 000. The funding would be used to appoint staff amongst many other aims that have to be accomplished. Riversdale Public Library would also become part of a beneficiary of the Western Cape’s Broadband Initiative.

The cheque handovers also aim to support libraries in the category B3 (vulnerable) municipalities.

Minister Meyer believes libraries are vital because they “connect people to information, knowledge management, to people, and to opportunities. Libraries give access to freedom you can use.”

The cheque handovers by DCAS are an excellent example of how the department and the municipalities are working together to continue the delivery of quality public library services.

Thus, libraries in these areas were touched by the generous, helping hand of the department. Libraries create social inclusion through their provision of a space where community life can flourish. The department, together with the libraries, will work better together to keep their values and services strong.
