Capping ceremony for SA National School Sport Summer Games participants

On Thursday, 8 December 2022, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), through its Directorate: Sport Development, hosted the capping ceremony for the Western Cape contingent who will be participating at the National School  Sport Championship Summer Games. The championship will take place in Pretoria from  9-14 December 2022. The capping ceremony took place at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

Nine codes, namely basketball, cricket, gymnastics, goalball, kgati, morabaraba, Rugby 7s, softball and table tennis will participate at the championship. Team Western Cape’s contingent consists of 248 school-going athletes, 21 managers, 43 coaches, 30 technical and other code officials and 27 support staff, as well as one doctor and nine physiotherapists.

The Chief Education Specialist from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), Mr R Larney, delivered a message of support. He indicated that the WCED supports DCAS to provide talented school-going athletes with the opportunity to participate at national events. The WCED is represented by 27 educators who are appointed as either coaches or managers, and two district-based officials who will conduct monitoring and evaluation. These educators and officials will assist with the safeguarding of the school-going athletes.

The Chief Director: Sport and Recreation from DCAS, Dr L Bouah, delivered the keynote address and encouraged the athletes to strive for excellence and realise their true potential. He acknowledged each of the nine codes and mentioned examples of success achieved in each of the codes. He wished the contingent well and reminded them that Team Western Cape are the reigning Winter Games champions. He urged Team Western Cape to bring the Summer Games trophy back to the Western Cape.
