Cape Town Stadium is Hosting a Soccer Event on Friday 27 August

18 August 2010

The Double Header soccer event at Cape Town Stadium next Friday 27 August is going ahead and excitement is mounting for the clash involving four top teams.

The popular fan walk from the central city to the stadium is being re-activated for the games which have been dubbed the "real deal" in local soccer - the official opener of the ABSA Premiership 2010 season.

The event kicks off with local team Vasco da Gama playing Orlando Pirates at 18:00, followed by Ajax Cape Town and Bloemfontein Celtic clashing at 20:45.

The event is part of Cape Town Stadium's drive to reinstate Football Fridays, this time with a "loving local" message attached, says Morne du Plessis, chairman of stadium operator SAIL STADEFRANCE.

"The stadium is here to stay and we want Capetonians to enjoy it. The Double Header event was conceived as a celebration of the spectacular success of the Cape Town Stadium as venue for the FIFA Soccer World Cup.

"When we devised the event, we went all out to make it a 'double bumper' special in order to thank all Capetonians for their help in making Cape Town the best host city.

"The games are going to be amazing and we are hoping to rekindle the magic of the fanwalk and the fan power elicited during the World Cup games.

"It's a great opportunity for those people who have not yet had the chance to enjoy great soccer live in the stadium - including the volunteers, students, policemen and women and all those fan park revellers to enjoy the "real thing".

"The Cape Town Stadium was built as a venue for all the people of Cape Town. It is an iconic Cape Town asset and a fully inclusive facility for all. What better way to celebrate this fact than by opening our doors to all?"

The City's Director: Communication, Pieter Cronjé, says: "This is wonderful chance for Capetonians and visitors to enjoy four great teams with a strong supporter base in a magnificent stadium. For those who have not experienced an event in Cape Town Stadium or who were not amongst the five hundred and seven thousand (507 000) spectators who saw World Cup matches there, this is the ideal opportunity. All those who saw any of the test events and World Cup games can relive the excitement and stadium experience.

"Those who were not amongst the five hundred ad eight thousand (580 000) people who experienced the fan walk, will have a chance to mingle with supporters and share the spirit or "gees". People should follow exactly the same rules as for the World Cup - buy your ticket beforehand, come early, travel light and use public transport."

Cape Town Stadium gates will open at 16:00. Spectators are asked to heed the following rules:

  • Short, fold-up umbrellas will be allowed
  • No cameras with extended photographic lenses
  • No food and drink (full catering services including Halaal and Kosher will be available at the venue)
  • No prams or bicycles

All prescribed medications such as inhalers and diabetic syringes will be allowed as will private wheelchairs.

Tickets for the game are available from all Computicket outlets from between R40 and R80.

Parking tickets, including disabled bay tickets, are also available to purchase at Computicket from between R30 and R50.
