Cape Town Reproductive Health Clinic Re-opened

21 August 2011

The Cape Town Reproductive Clinic has now re-opened after it moved from its location at Cape Town train station. The clinic was forced to close temporarily in September 2010 due to the train station undergoing renovations at the time. Staff members were then allocated to the neighbouring clinics around Cape Town.

As from 1 July 2011, the clinic operates from its new location in the Golden Acre, where it will provide services to the entire Cape Town CBD. The clinic has 11 staff members and sees about 4 000 to 6 000 patients monthly.

Western Cape Health Minister, Theuns Botha, says: "It is obvious from the numbers of people that visit this clinic every month that there is a dire need for these services in the centre of the city. I am relieved that the clinic could re-open in the Golden Acre, where it is accessible for many of our citizens, whether they work in town or are on their way to town."

Visitors to the clinic can receive the following services:

  • HIV counselling and testing.
  • STI testing and treatment.
  • Termination of pregnancy (TOP) counselling and referrals.
  • Cervical smears and breast examinations for female patients.
  • Emergency contraceptives.
  • Injectables and oral contraceptives as well as the intra-uterine device, which is inserted to prevent pregnancies.
