Caledon Museum hosts “Girl love yourself” in honour of Women’s Day

14 September 2017

On 1 September 2017, the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s (DCAS) Caledon Museum invested in a “Girl Love Yourself”-activity. The event was held at the Swartberg High School in Caledon and hosted 350 girls from the local community.

DCAS partnered with the Western Cape Department of Health (DOH) and an organisation called Power to Power which focused on empowering and motivating youth. The topics discussed tackled some serious social issues such as peer pressure, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. The girls also had an opportunity to visit a kiosk set up by the DOH where they could discuss health-related questions and contraception. The highlight of the event was the keynote address by Grizelda Grootboom from Embrace Dignity, the author of a book called Exit. The book centres around her experience of being trafficked and sold as sex slave at 18.

Lithalethu Mshoti, Caledon Museum Manager says: “This initiative was well received by the close knit community of Caledon, and will go a long way in uplifting the young women in our community”.

Let us continue to use programmes such as these to educate the youth and create a better future for them BETTER TOGETHER.
