Bus and Minibus Tax Lane Operation Nets 122 Offenders

19 October 2009
Cape Town Traffic Services this morning targeted offenders who illegally use the BMT lane during peak hour traffic.

The following offences were recorded during the three hour operation:

122 Bus lane offences
32 Unlicensed drivers
20 Unlicensed motor vehicles
8 Number plates
5 Smooth tyres
1 Defective light
5 Passenger overloads in mini-buses
2 Illegal taxi operators
1 Disregarding the channelising line
2 Failure to wear safety belts

A Ghost Squad member stopped a Mazda LDV at 07:15 for the illegal use of the bus lane. The driver of the vehicle was subjected to a sobriety test which included a breathalyser test. A reading of 1.82 was recorded, which is almost seven times over the legal limit of 0,05grams of alcohol per 100ml of blood. A 46-year old driver was arrested and a case docket was opened at the Mowbray Police Station.

''Driving under the influence of alcohol is very dangerous, especially on the freeway in the morning where there is a high volume of traffic. We appeal to motorists to drive responsibly'', says Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services.
