Bishop Lavis Shooting Incident – SASSA must Increase Security

1 June 2014

Media Release by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

Following a shooting incident at a social service payout point in Bishop Lavis this morning I am calling on the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to immediately increase security services at all other payout points.

This is not the first time that a SASSA payout point has been attacked by criminals, which indicates that criminals have clearly identified the payout points as easy targets.

The SASSA will have to work with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to assess security vulnerabilities and together implement a strategy to ensure the safety of those coming to collect much needed payouts.

Our communities’ most vulnerable are those lining up to receive their monthly payouts, and when a payout point is shut down due to a shooting those that are in most desperate need of the funds are left without food on the table until the payout point is reopened.

While visiting the scene this morning I learned that the South African Police Service had reacted immediately and have already made several arrests. I would like to congratulate the SAPS for their swift action in apprehending the criminals – this quick reaction is sure to build confidence in the SAPS.
