Best Western Cape Athletes Honoured at Sport Awards

6 March 2013

Committed athletes who make the most of their opportunities and receive the unwavering support of their families achieve success. This was the message to nominees at the 2012 Western Cape Sport Awards ceremony in Somerset West on Friday, 1 March 2013. The event was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), supported by the regional federations, sport councils and district municipalities.

Twenty-three proud winners received due recognition for their achievements on the night. The winners of this year’s awards will be eager to make the province proud at the upcoming South African National Sport Awards ceremony.

Jossie Makatees, an athlete from the West Coast, felt honoured to have been nominated in the Sportsman with a Disability of the Year category. “I worked hard last year, and I feel proud of what I’ve achieved. Drawing inspiration from Paralympic athletes like Charles Bouwer and Dyan Buis will spur me on towards my dream of representing South Africa at the 2016 Paralympic Games”, he said.

The important role of sport in Western Cape schools and communities was emphasised by DCAS Head of Department Mr Brent Walters. He described the athletes’ achievements as “the bedrock of a bright sporting future”. “We are proud of the athletes for the inspirational role they play, allowing others to follow in their footsteps, and making a difference”, Walters said.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, added that the occasion gave expression to the “Better Together” slogan of the Western Cape Government. He reminded nominees that they should be mindful that their accomplishments were achieved with the help of others. “You can only move from good to better with your family’s support. The fact that you are better together shows that the impossible is possible. We see our athletes as an extension of who we are and what we can achieve.”
